Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Sticks With Shohei Ohtani for Crucial NLCS Game 3 Despite Playoff Struggles
Despite a challenging postseason at the plate and persistent injury concerns, the Los Angeles Dodgers manager expressed unwavering confidence in his superstar.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts likely never envisioned a scenario where he would contemplate removing Shohei Ohtani from a postseason lineup. However, with the team trailing the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 in the National League Championship Series and Ohtani facing significant offensive challenges, a pivotal decision loomed for Game 3 at Dodger Stadium.
Ultimately, Roberts has opted to maintain his faith in the Japanese superstar, confirming Ohtani's presence in the lineup.
During the team's off-day on Tuesday, Roberts spoke to reporters about Ohtani's ongoing left knee and right arm issues. "He’s adamant he feels good enough to be in there," Roberts stated. "He’s close to finding something with his swing. I feel great about it."
Ohtani's Postseason Performance
As the Dodgers' designated hitter, Ohtani has endured a difficult stretch throughout the postseason. His batting average has dipped to a mere .150 following an 0-for-4 performance with two strikeouts in the Game 2 defeat against the Brewers in Milwaukee. Furthermore, he has yet to record an extra-base hit or an RBI during the playoffs.
The discussion surrounding Ohtani's inclusion in the Game 3 lineup was initially sparked by Roberts himself, following his postgame remarks on Monday night.
After consulting with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes, Roberts ultimately concluded that the four-time MVP deserved another opportunity to contribute.
Roberts elaborated on his decision, stating, "He was very convicted that he is onto something mechanically. He was adamant that he can help us, he’s well enough to help us win a baseball game. So, that’s all I needed to hear."
Speaking through his interpreter, Will Ireton, Ohtani conveyed his perspective: "The symptoms shouldn’t be the reason why I can’t hit." He also openly accepted "full responsibility" for his performance throughout October.
Battling Persistent Injuries
The injuries affecting Ohtani are not new; he has managed these issues throughout the regular season, including a period on the injured list to address his arm. These ailments have visibly hindered the powerful hitter, who has not launched a home run since August 18, an uncharacteristic drought for Ohtani.
Roberts emphasized that his belief in Ohtani has "never wavered," viewing his decision for Game 3 as a clear demonstration of that enduring confidence.
The critical question remains whether this show of confidence will yield results in a game widely considered a must-win for the Dodgers to regain momentum in their pursuit of another World Series title.
