The Baltimore Orioles' annual Pride Night included a celebrity appearance and remarks on recent policy decisions impacting the LGBTQ+ community.

The Baltimore Orioles held their annual Pride Night, an event observed by numerous Major League Baseball teams. The ballpark was adorned with themed decorations, including the word "PRIDE" spelled out on the iconic brick wall of the Baltimore & Ohio Warehouse at Camden Yards, a landmark known for marking Cal Ripken Jr.’s record-breaking consecutive games played streak. The Orioles' "O" logo was also painted in progressive Pride rainbow colors behind home plate, and costumed characters, known as furries, were present at the stadium during Friday night's game against the Washington Nationals.
Among the notable aspects of the evening was the participation of Heidi N Closet, a drag performer from Season 12 of "RuPaul's Drag Race," who served as the celebrity splasher at The Bird Bath, a family-friendly section of the ballpark. Closet's subsequent remarks regarding the Trump administration's policies added a political dimension to the event.
Celebrity Guest's Remarks on Administration Policy
During an interview with Baltimore Banner Sports, Heidi N Closet addressed various policy decisions and statements made by the Trump administration concerning the LGBTQ+ community. When asked about the importance of hosting an LGBTQ+ Pride Night, Closet stated:
"Especially during this administration, we’ve seen how so many things have been rolled back: DEI and so many different things. And we’ve seen companies step away from the queer community. It’s beautiful to see an organization like the Orioles say, 'No, we’re going to continue standing with them,' even when it was so easy to turn your back."
Government Stance on DEI and Women's Sports
The Trump administration has articulated its approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, advocating for policies that, according to its arguments, protect equal opportunity and uphold existing civil rights laws through a "colorblind" framework. This perspective suggests that hiring should be based on merit rather than factors such as race or sexual identity.
Furthermore, the administration has taken steps to address the participation of transgender athletes in women's sports. In 2025, an executive order titled "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports" was signed, which aims to direct federal agencies to enforce Title IX by defining "sex" as biological sex. The stated goal of this order is to prevent men and boys from competing in female sports categories. The White House commented on this issue, stating:
"In recent years, many educational institutions and athletic associations have allowed men to compete in women’s sports. This is demeaning, unfair, and dangerous to women and girls, and denies women and girls the equal opportunity to participate and excel in competitive sports."
Major League Baseball's DEI Adjustments
Interestingly, Major League Baseball itself has reportedly modified some of its DEI initiatives. These adjustments are said to be in response to federal government scrutiny, leading the league to reduce visible DEI branding and review and alter certain program language and structural elements.
The Orioles' decision to feature a performer who vocalized strong political views during a family-oriented event has prompted discussion among some observers regarding the intersection of sports, entertainment, and political discourse.
