Seahawks Coach Mike Macdonald Details 'Cold War' with Sean Payton Over Alleged Scouting Dispute
Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald recounts a tense disagreement with Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton stemming from Macdonald's use of publicly available practice footage.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald recently disclosed a period of intense friction, which he termed a 'Cold War,' with Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. The dispute centered on Macdonald's staff utilizing publicly available footage of Broncos training camp practices.
During a conversation with Graham Bensinger, Macdonald explained that he and his team discovered approximately 100 plays posted by fans on X (formerly Twitter). These fans had recorded Broncos training-camp sessions in 2024. With the Seahawks' initial game of that season scheduled against Denver, Macdonald's staff reviewed these plays to gain a strategic edge.
The strategy proved effective. Seattle secured a 26-20 victory in Russell Wilson's return to Lumen Field for his first game against his former team.
Payton's Outburst and the Standoff
According to Macdonald, Payton did not react favorably to the Seahawks' scouting methods. Macdonald told Bensinger that Payton learned about the social media-sourced plays mid-season and subsequently 'lost his mind.'
"He called [Seahawks general manager John Schneider] and basically threatened to come out publicly and do a whole Patriots Spygate type of thing," Macdonald recalled. "And I'm sitting there like 'Oh my God, we didn't cheat!'"
The situation did not escalate into a public controversy because, as Macdonald stated, Schneider reportedly threatened legal action if Payton proceeded with his public accusations. This led to what Macdonald characterized as a 'Cold War' scenario, where both coaching staffs maintained a tense distance without any public confrontation.
A Post-Season Encounter
After the season concluded, Macdonald recounted a chance encounter with Payton at his Indianapolis hotel during the NFL Combine week. Expecting a confrontation, Macdonald instead observed a subdued demeanor from Payton, who acted as if nothing had transpired.
"I was kind of like over him, and he was just like, 'Hey coach,' and he totally backed down in that moment," Macdonald shared. "I was like, 'Oh, man. That's great'."
Analyzing the Scouting Tactics
Macdonald maintained that his actions were entirely legitimate. He argued that his staff did nothing wrong, asserting that their approach bore no resemblance to the deliberate rule-breaking seen in events like Spygate. Instead, he framed it as the Seahawks demonstrating an astute awareness of where to find publicly disclosed information.
The incident also highlights differing approaches to practice security. While the specific rules for filming at Broncos practices were not detailed, Macdonald noted that the Seahawks prohibit any recording of camp practices once individual periods have concluded. This policy reflects a prudent measure that, in his view, all teams should adopt to prevent such information from becoming public.
Sean Payton's History of Controversy
This episode adds another layer to Sean Payton's public image. His reputation has previously been impacted by the 2012 Bountygate scandal, which resulted in his suspension for the entire season when the New Orleans Saints were found to have offered payments to players for injuring targeted opponents.
He has also been associated with other controversial comments, such as a remark to Giants co-owner John Mara stating, "We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game," which was perceived as a jab at a team's quarterback situation.
This latest incident appears to be another instance of Payton attempting to accuse another team of wrongdoing where no actual cheating occurred.
"He's not my biggest fan," Macdonald commented on Payton's sentiments.
The newfound platform and success of Macdonald as the Seahawks' head coach likely contributed to his willingness to share this story. Now at the helm, Macdonald's position suggests he achieved his standing without resorting to shortcuts.
