Football's international governing body, FIFA, has launched an official investigation into the widespread altercations that occurred on the field following Spain's victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup Final. The championship match, held at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, saw Spain clinch the title with a 1-0 win in extra time against the reigning 2022 World Cup champions.
The decisive goal came from Ferran Torres, who managed to get the ball past Argentina's goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, breaking the deadlock. However, the jubilant celebrations for Spain were overshadowed by a series of confrontations between players and even coaching staff that erupted immediately after the final whistle.
Post-Match Chaos Unfolds
As the match concluded, multiple skirmishes broke out across the pitch. Among the most notable incidents, Argentina's Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Spain's Eric García by the throat, leading to a wider scene of players pushing and tripping one another onto the ground. Paredes was subsequently shown a red card after the whistle, resulting in his dismissal from the field. He had previously received a yellow card earlier in the second half for a challenge shortly after being substituted into the game.
The heated exchanges also involved coaching personnel. Argentina's head coach, Lionel Scaloni, was observed being restrained by a Spanish player while shouting intensely towards an unidentified individual. Additionally, Argentina's Nicola Otamendi engaged in verbal confrontations with several Spanish players, including their captain, Rodrí, before the situation was diffused.
Another significant incident reportedly involved Argentina's assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, who was seen approaching Spain's Dani Olmo and allegedly striking him on the chin before others intervened to separate them.
Official Response and Disciplinary Action
FIFA confirmed its decision to initiate proceedings, stating,
"Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents."This investigation aims to determine if any rules of the FIFA Disciplinary Code were violated during the chaotic aftermath of the match.
The inquiry is expected to focus on several key individuals. Leandro Paredes' actions, particularly the apparent chokehold on a Spanish player, will be a central point of investigation, with his post-match red card automatically applied. Nahuel Molina and assistant coach Roberto Ayala are also anticipated to face scrutiny as part of the ongoing disciplinary process.
Reactions from Coaches and Analysts
In the wake of the defeat and subsequent events, Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni reflected on his team's performance and the importance of sportsmanship.
"We are gracious in victory, and we must be so in defeat," Scaloni was quoted as saying. "We accept the loss; we gave everything. We were stretched thin coming into this, but giving it your all, like they did today, sets a great example for our people and our country. You lose, and you have to pick yourself up again."
Many observers were quick to criticize Argentina for the unruly behavior that followed their loss. Among them was football analyst Joe Hart, who commented on the lack of composure shown by some players.
"There was one man on the pitch who did have class and that was Lionel Messi, who shook hands with every one of those Spanish players," Hart stated. "The game's done. They could have absolutely no complaints about what happened today. Disgusting behavior."
