Deshaun Watson Transforms Perception, Earning Cheers After Guiding Browns to Upset Win
Quarterback Deshaun Watson, previously met with boos, experienced a dramatic shift in fan support during Cleveland's surprising victory against the Carolina Panthers.

A remarkable shift in sentiment unfolded in Cleveland on Sunday as quarterback Deshaun Watson, previously a target of home crowd disapproval, steered the Browns to an upset victory against the favored Carolina Panthers.
The transformation was palpable: the same fans who had vocally expressed their displeasure towards their starting signal-caller, with jeers echoing from the Dawg Pound, ultimately rallied behind him, chanting, "Let's go Watson" as the game neared its conclusion.
A Shift in Home Crowd Dynamics
In the latter half of the contest, the only discernible boos directed at Watson arose when he was sacked for a seven-yard loss on a critical third down by Carolina edge rusher Princely Umanmielen. However, replays displayed on the stadium's large screens clearly showed Umanmielen grabbing and twisting Watson’s facemask without a penalty call from the officials, sparking the crowd's frustration at the officiating rather than the quarterback.
Watson himself acknowledged the change, stating after the game,
"I was hearing the crowd, the yelling the positivity. That's my main focus. I didn't hear any of [the boos], but at the same time, I was just trying to give them something to cheer about and we got that W so that's all that matters."
This positive reception stood in stark contrast to previous interactions. Just during the preseason, Watson had publicly characterized the home crowd as "disrespectful" for booing him after he sustained an Achilles injury in 2024 and again during his initial return to Huntington Bank Field for a preseason game. He had even described the dynamic between himself and the fans as "personal," suggesting it was unrelated to his on-field performance.
Understanding Past Discontent
While Watson's two passing touchdowns and the subsequent comeback win undeniably played a role in swaying opinion, demonstrating that performance does indeed matter, the reasons for previous fan ire were multifaceted. A significant factor included his substantial contract and a perceived inability to consistently deliver commensurate value over the past four years. Furthermore, the NFL suspension Watson served in 2022, stemming from allegations of sexual assaults involving two dozen female massage therapists, contributed heavily to a reluctance among many Browns supporters to extend him leniency.
All these elements combined had created a challenging environment for the quarterback, making any misstep subject to heightened scrutiny and negative feedback from the stands.
The Game-Changing Performance
However, Watson appeared to win over a segment of the fanbase, at least for one afternoon, by orchestrating a fourth-quarter rally that saw his team overcome a 12-10 deficit. This particular game marked Watson's first regular-season home appearance of the current season and his first since the 2024 Achilles rupture, adding a layer of significance to his comeback effort.
Reflecting on the day, Watson described his intense anticipation:
"From the moment I woke up, just the anticipation, just the anxiousness, just everything, just to get in front of the fans, just to get here, just to get started. I wanted to play perfect so bad, but, you know, that's the NFL with its ups and downs ... The energy, the fans, it was amazing. They kept believing in us. They kept the energy up ... And we just continued to feed off that energy of the crowd."
The successful turnaround against the Panthers, fueled by Watson's late-game heroics and a newfound connection with the home crowd, signaled a potential turning point in his tenure with the team.
