While many consider themselves avid sports enthusiasts, few can match the dedication and immersion of sports business expert Darren Rovell. As the founder of Cllct and Kickstand Cocktails, and an investor in ventures like Athletic Brewing and Pop Up Bagels, Rovell’s deep ties to the sports world are undeniable, further solidified by his impressive collection of memorabilia.
However, an unexpected admission might challenge perceptions of his ultimate sports fandom: Rovell openly shared that he departed Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs prematurely.
A Historic Turnaround Missed
The game in question was a pivotal moment. The New York Knicks found themselves trailing the San Antonio Spurs by a significant 29 points, a deficit that could have dramatically shifted the series' momentum in favor of San Antonio. Yet, the Knicks mounted an extraordinary comeback, spearheaded by guard Jalen Brunson.
The dramatic conclusion saw OG Anunoby tipping in Brunson's missed free throw, securing a stunning victory for New York. This particular contest has been hailed as one of the most thrilling basketball games in recent memory, drawing comparisons to the nail-biting intensity of Ray Allen's decisive three-pointer in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals, which proved crucial for the Miami Heat and the legacy of LeBron James.
Rovell's Candid Account
Rovell explained his early exit during a recent interview.
I left Game 4 at the half,he recounted, noting his presence in the press section.
I said, ‘This is the worst game I have ever been to.’
He continued, describing the realization of what he had missed:
I came home and saw the ending and then I said, ‘All right, just for my psyche, I’m gonna have to get to Game 5.’
True to his word, Rovell traveled to San Antonio for Game 5, where he witnessed the Knicks defeat the Spurs 94-90. This victory marked a historic achievement for the Knicks, securing their first championship since 1973.
As Knicks fans continue to celebrate this championship well into the 2026-27 season, many will vividly recall where they were during that miraculous Game 4. For Rovell, and likely numerous others, the memory of that electrifying finish will forever be linked to watching from home rather than from inside Madison Square Garden.
