During a recent US Open match, tennis star Aryna Sabalenka paused play, citing an overwhelming smell of marijuana emanating from the stands. The incident occurred on Friday in Queens, New York, during her third-round contest against Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova.
The Belarusian athlete was observed communicating with the crowd before approaching umpire Eva Asderaki‑Moore. Sabalenka was heard stating, "Someone is smoking weed. Do you mind? Because it’s so strong."
Sabalenka ultimately secured a victory in the match, but the event once again brought attention to the recurring issue of cannabis use at the US Open.
Recurring Cannabis Concerns at Flushing Meadows
This is not an isolated incident; concerns about the pervasive odor of marijuana have been raised for several years, particularly since the legalization of cannabis in New York City. Athletes competing on certain courts have reportedly contended with the strong scent of marijuana smoke during play.
Reports indicate that local cannabis dispensaries are now offering delivery services directly to tennis fans attending the tournament. Tre Davidson, a manager at Silk Road, a nearby dispensary, commented on the trend, telling a local publication, "You get high, it makes [tennis] a little more entertaining."
Seeking a Solution for Athletes and Spectators
While recreational enjoyment is a common aspect of large sporting events, the presence of strong cannabis smoke can directly affect athletes who are performing at an elite level and do not wish to be exposed to it.
Addressing this challenge may prove difficult, but a potential solution lies in promoting the use of edibles. This would allow spectators to continue enjoying cannabis while eliminating the smoke that can drift onto the courts, ensuring that athletes can breathe clean air during their matches.
Fans could still experience the desired effects of cannabis, perhaps finding the tennis action more engaging or simply enjoying a different sensory experience, without creating an airborne nuisance for the competitors.
